Recently many Geocachers have taken on the challenge of filling in their caching calendars. We started paying attention to our caching calendar about halfway through the year and have done well grabbing a geocache on the few calendar days on which we'd had none (though the four winter months, especially January, are the tough ones with fewer days we'd found caches). While this has forced us to get out for a cache or two when we'd otherwise wouldn't, it has been a little like work and not necessarily for all cachers. Whether you're up for it or not, take notice that this year will be the only chance to find a cache on February 29th till 2016. The 29th of February falls on a Wednesday this year but there are about a hundred events already scheduled. As you're looking forward to the year ahead, maybe take a moment to mark on your calendar or add it to the smartphone, and make plans to attend an event and grab a cache on this unique day.

Cache-A-Maniacs Listener Farewell Messages

Google+ Hangouts on the Podcasts

As many Geocaching Podcast Listener know something a little different was tested during last week's Cacher Coffee episode. We used the Hangouts feature of Google+ allowing up to nine Google+ users into the conversation from their computers. Overall it was quite successful with multiple people from the Hangout speaking-up during the show. Thanks to that interaction we will be trying the Hangouts again, but we're not sure when. If you're on Google+ make sure to add me to your circles. If you're not on Google+ but would like to be, drop me an e-mail with the address to which you'd like to have the invite sent (gmail addresses are fine, but Google App Domains are not currently supported. Please also let me know if you're into Munzees and Photography as well so I can add you to those circles.). I'll post the notices on Google+ as to when we'll be trying the Hangouts, and of course the Hangouts will be opened their when we're ready to host the show. As a general rule I'll try opening the Hangouts between 9:10 and 9:20PM Eastern when we'll be using them.

I've had a few people asking how I'm getting the connection to TalkShoe (the live bridge we use for the Geocaching Podcast) from the Google+ Hangouts. To make these work I'm connecting the laptop's Google+ Hangout audio into the mixing board used in my local Geocaching Podcast rig. Only the audio is coming out of and going back into the board through an M-Audio Fast Track Pro audio interface (which must be set as the "Microphone" and "Speaker" in the Google+ Hangout "Settings"). That just ends up on the board as a separate input channel (the "Speaker" setting in Google+ Hangouts), then I feed mix-minus to the USB interface (the "Microphone" setting in Google+ Hangouts). Video for our first test came from the internal webcam of the laptop set to the side. Next time I'll be using the Logitech Webcam Pro C910 (I just got that this weekend) which can be mounted on the computer I use for the TalkShoe Pro interface and show doc while being connected to the laptop off to the side. You can select which webcam is being used through the Google+ Hangout Settings. It really is quite simple if you have a board with the inputs and outputs you need, and I'm finding that the quality of the audio from the Hangouts isn't bad.

I'd really like to try using the Hangout function to host in Cache-A-Maniacs interview. Not to broadcast the interviews, but rather to interview our guest through a Google+ Hangout. Not only would we actually get to see our guest (and they us), but I suspect if the guest has a quality USB headset the audio would sound much better than a telephone connection. Coming Munzee Material Testing

The last several weeks we've been getting into the new Munzee game, especially placing game pieces. These game pieces use QR codes to register a find rather than a physical log book. As such they can be placed in the open, in plain view if you like, and scanned without the player touching the game piece (I even have one behind glass at my office). But those game pieces placed in the open must withstand the elements. We've been playing with a few variations on the materials used to produce the game pieces and have had some mixed success. My first placement (Troy's First Munzee) was expected to be most reliable -- a thermal laminated sheet printed from a color laser printer. The problem with that method was in attaching it to a surface (without risking damage). After placing a few we've found our favorite to be a flat magnet with the game piece attached to the front. The problem in that method has been two fold -- finding a printable surface which will withstand the weather, and an adhesive which will hold through the exposure. As a Geocacher we have used the Rite in the Rain copier paper for our logs with success so started there. We felt that might not last as well as we'd hoped once the first few were placed so we switched to National Geographic Adventure Paper (we played with it some on caching runs but that product doesn't allow pen or pencil marks easily) as it's a plastics-based product. That seems to be working better but we still haven't had them out long enough to really know. What we really need is full scale testing of multiple materials to tell us the best method.

Since that's not likely to happen on a large enough scale to be definitive, I've decided to enlist the help from a few Google+ contacts to print and test several options myself. I'll be testing prints from six different printers (two different HP inkjet types, an Epson UltraChrome inkjet, two different color lasers, and a monochrome laser) on several stocks:

I'll be subjecting those specimens to several forms of destructive testing in an attempt to replicate, as best I can from my apartment, the prolonged exposure to the elements. The samples are currently being mailed between those assisting in the production of those test specimens so it will be a few weeks before I'm able to start testing. I'll be using that time to flush out the method of tests and which print surfaces will receive which finishes. Watch me on Google+ as I'll be posting updates to my fellow Munzee players there while testing is underway. Of course as I complete the testing I'll be posting the results to this blog.

iPhone Munzee users have a treat for their weekend hunting. This is the version which includes the much discussed and anticipated journal feature. Now iOS users can leave notes and star ratings for the Munzees they find. More important is the ability to note that a Munzee was not found. Of course there are more features and some bugs addressed as well added to this young app. The app (and membership) are still free. The app is available from the iOS App Store.

The app is still $9.99 for new users (available in the iOS App Store), and free for upgrading users.

Inside the Podcast Studio: GeoWoodstock IX

I've had a few people asking about the gear we brought out to GeoWoodstock IX for the Podcast Studio (especially following the "Several Unsung Heroes of GeoWoodstock IX" post by HeadHardHat on his blog) so I thought I'd post a list of the equipment list for what we actually used (I'll be leaving out all the spares, cables, stands, brackets, and the gear for the streaming since that wasn't set-up). While most of the recording gear was mine, much of the gear was borrowed or purchased. Happily all this gear has been returned to their usual locations. Our podcast studio is up and ready to record more interviews with Geocachers tonight. The other equipment is out visiting company events, productions, and occasionally a wedding. If we were to set-up this system from scratch I wouldn't have used some of this gear (it's designed for studio use rather than field use and didn't like the temperatures late in the day). Of course there would be changes to this kit if we were to attempt another event studio. The big question is when and whether we'd do this again. That answer remains to be seen.

Cache-A-Maniacs Live Stream?

It's been more than a year since the last time we streamed live recordings of the Cache-A-Maniacs via our Ustream channel. It does take some time to set-up and run the streams and we weren't getting many viewers. There seems to me more people interested again in watching live video from podcast recordings so we're considering running the experiment again. We've done some of the prep for steaming again for the GeoWoodstock IX Podcast Studio (which sadly did not work out). The question is whether you would be interested in checking out those live recordings of the Cache-A-Maniacs interviews? Searching in the iOS App Store today I found another tool for the iOS Geocachers. "GCTools - The geocaching tool collection!" hasn't received very good reviews in the app store, but it is free and shows promise. It currently has coordinate tools, encoding/decoding tools, data tables, and converts. Also of note is the option to use either the screen or camera flash as a flashlight. I'll be watching this app for improvements in the future but for free it's worth the download.

Now you can quickly perform a search for multiple cache types while omitting some types, look for difficulty and terrain ranges, search by size, and more. Quite a few people have asked to be kept abreast of the status on our new geocoins. We received our second set of samples following some corrections and finally approved our 2011 coins. Provided all goes well from here we should see the coins in roughly a month. Once they've arrived we'll have some for trade and Firefly03 will be taking care of lining up and making those trades closer to their arrival. So watch for more information in a few weeks.

Garmin announce Friday the launch of apps for both Android and iOS for users of their OpenCaching.com site. The complete release is available on their site, but the short of it is that Android and iOS users can download and use the apps for free. The app supports finding, hiding, and learning about geocaching through the OpenCaching.com. Android users can download the app from the Android Marketplace, and iPhone users can get the app from the iOS App Store.

The Free Event That Costs Hundreds

The original concept of Coffee, Coins, & Sigs was to be an event costing us nothing to host. We were working with a local coffee shop to host at most a couple dozen cachers and they'd sell some drinks. Unfortunately the "will attend" logs for that first event rapidly grew too large for the local coffee shops and we had to move at the last minute to a rented facility and supply the refreshments ourselves. We spent something like $500 on that first event and did receive something in the neighborhood of $100 in donations. Since then we've been able to plan for the bigger crowds and get in about the $200 or lower mark. Usually we've been able to find a partner in a park service wiling to donate the room meaning we only need to supply the refreshments (this last time only cost about $140). We even once found a facility with a coffee bar to rent the room freeing us from the management of the refreshments. Unfortunately there can be a cost to hosting successful event concepts so it's worth thinking about when you're planning that next great event idea.

One of the best things about Geocaching is its low cost. That is, it's low cost once you've bought the GPSR, paid for the internet access, maybe a year's subscription to Geocaching.com, the gallons of gas you'll burn, the extra wear on the vehicle, perhaps the public transit, the geocoins, pathtags, containers, batteries, and, well, yes -- there are many expenses to Geocaching. It does get us out and visiting new locations we might not have visited before and we like that it does. We're a small group using the world as our game board but we're not the only ones using it. We rely on the support from land owners to allow the community access. Many times that's simply driven by a desire to have more visitors, other times it's used to draw us in for a visit. We've seen and heard many stories of small community supporting Geocaching as they've seen an economic value from the visiting Geocachers. Whether you stop into a local gas station for a water or stay the night at a hotel, mention that you're in the area visiting for Geocaching. It's a small thing but you might be surprised how far it can go to support our favorite past time. Especially when there's a cache on their property the business owner is happy to know they're getting a return on that little effort and inconvenience. It's another way we as Geocachers can give back to the communities we visit. Perhaps their employees might remember it when they're about to dial up the local law enforcement on that strange person lifting the lamp skirt at 1:00AM.

Thoughts From Coffee, Coins, & Sigs Spring 2011

After each of our events we look back at new lessons and observations gleamed from it. We came away with several new event concepts from our Coffee, Coins, & Sigs Spring 2011 yesterday and thought we'd share them for others interested in hosting them and those who would like to weigh in. Of course there were many more things we picked up from the event we'll use for future CC&S events, but these are really more for separate events.

Geocoins 101

Many of the cachers at the Coffee, Coins, & Sigs Spring 2011 event had little or no knowledge of Geocoins, Pathtags, signature items, or even trackables for that matter. Much of our time with individuals was going over the differences between these items, how they work, what to do with them, and how to get your own. The laptop with a MiFi came in handy as I walked a couple people through logging the trackables they discovered or grabbed at the event (and showed them how to drop or visit a trackable). Firefly03 took some time with many of the attendees going over geocoins, how to tell if they're trackable, what to do with them, mystery coins (her favorite), pathtags, and how to go about getting them. All of these are topics which could be covered in a "Geocaching 201" type class and we're thinking it might be a good idea to host something like that. My current thought is to title it "Geocaching 250: Trackables & Signature Items" and cover the entire gamut. Firefly03 is also thinking about a more specialized "About Geocoins" event. I'd really like to see more people address trackables in their Geocaching 101 classes, but even then there's so much more to go over that a "Geocaching 150: Working with Trackables" might be a great idea. That might be a better concept as it would allow Geocachers to attend the more basic functions of working with trackables without being overloaded by the more esoteric details covered in a "About Geocoins" class. Of course all these items could be sessions in a Cachercon, but we're thinking they might be better (and easier) to break out as individual events. We'd love to get your feedback in the comments about such events.

Geocaching Gadget Gab

I don't suppose that nobody would be surprised to discover that this was really my baby. I love to find gadgets of all sorts to improve my life. When I find ones that improve my Geocaching I love sharing those items with my fellow cachers. Many of the cachers at yesterday's event enjoyed learning about the external battery packs I use for our iPhones and other USB powered devices (yes, even the GPSRs). Many were enamored with the new MacBook Air and the MiFi I used for mobile internet access. I've more than once shared information on my podcasts about rechargeable AA NiMH batteries (particularly low-discharge) and like using Lithium batteries for their improved performance in many of the units. I had a couple of great, small, inexpensive testers for many types of batteries on the prize table which were a big hit with some of the attendees who had been looking for just that. One comment was that I really should host an event to share some of these cool finds with my fellow Geocachers. I thought it sounded good but see two possible events. The first is the traditional class (or session at a Cachercon), but the second would be more like a specialized Meet & Greet. Think of it as a "show-and-tell" over coffee where all the attendees could bring in gadgets they found and used and check out the gadgets others enjoy. I think both have their merits, but the later would make a better event. Would you be interested in attending (or even hosting) a "Geocaching Gadget Gab?"

Coffee, Coins, & Sigs Museum

Of course many people were asking we bring back our Geocoin and Signature Item focused event again in the fall. We're still thinking about it but it does cost us some non-trival money to hosts these (I'll try to post more about that later) and we're afraid of hitting that burn-out point with the events we saw a couple years ago and currently see with the variety of Monthly Meet & Greets in the area. One concept we had was for a "museum" section next time. This would actually be a return to some of former Coffee, Coins, & Sigs events when people would bring their collections and set them up for people to view and ask questions. The trouble was those hosting the "exhibits" couldn't generally get away from their exhibits to check-out the other collections or spend any time trading with each other. A way to address this issue came to us following this Coffee, Coins, & Sigs since our venue had an area which could be closed off, in this case a loft, to allow limited access to those collections. Given such a feature at a future venue we're thinking of inviting some of the bigger collectors in the area the chance to set-up their displays early, then join the group for an hour or so of socializing and trading when that museum area would be closed. We'd then open the museum for an hour or two allowing all attendees to check out the displays before closing it down again to resume the socialization and trading. Once a year might even be too frequent for these "museum" events, but it would add some value to the trading as attendees would likely learn more about what is available and how to better value the coins and signature items in their trading. Would you be interested in such a curated exhibition? Perhaps it might work better as more of a specific gallery event without the trading focus?

Of course none of these are firm ideas and most aren't likely to go far. We'd like to throw them out for feedback and in hopes they might inspire fellow cachers all over the globe to try some different events in their region. Let us know if you do and what you find from those events.

2011 Geocoin?

This is not an announcement, just mention that we're looking at producing a 2011 geocoin. We've submitted the artwork at right for bid for a more limited run of trackable coins. These will be very similar to the 2005 joint coin we did, just modified slightly and in different metals. We liked the simplicity of that first coin and are looking to continue that series. We'll see what the quotes have to say when they come back, but there might be a 2011 DarrylW4 & Firefly03 coin floating around before long.

Hosting Our First Geocaching 101

We enjoyed hosting our first Geocaching 101 class yesterday in Marine City. When we first talked about hosting a Geocaching 101 in Marine City our expectation was to attract a few people (about four or five) but ended up with sixteen people registering for the class. That changed our format from the planned round table to a lecture format and meant developing a set of slides for support of our talk. I had gathered many sample files and decided that none fit the bill for a very short, one hour class. Since I wanted our class to be no more than forty minutes in the classroom then the balance outside hunting, it would be a crash course with hands-on experience. It covers the different listing services, the gear needed, finding and reading the listing (including terrain, difficultly, and size), GPS error, swag trading, trackables, and logging for a total of a 35 minute crash course. The key was to get the attendees out with some more experienced cachers for a nano cache hidden on the front of the building (with no information other than it's a micro right out front), a rock cache, and a small plastic container under a bush. We ended up with a great, short class taking just over an hour total giving the students everything they need to find their first real caches as responsible cachers after completing the class.

The result was an audience glued to us and our presentation for the 35 minutes in the classroom, followed by very excited attendees hunting down their sample caches. That wasn't enough though and nearly all of them continued on with their experienced cacher escorts to attempt a couple more micros nearby (one a DNF, the other a pretty quick grab). More important; our hosts from the city were thrilled with the session and are looking forward to getting more involved in caching and to host more geocaching events. I think we have more than a dozen new, very excited, active geocachers from this effort and another land manager excited about geocaching. That's a win in my book.

Team Ducky's Cache-A-Maniacs Guest Ducky

Cache-A-Maniacs guests Team-Ducky made and released one of their signature ducks marking their appearance on episode 202. Each of their ducks are decorated, photographed, and recorded before release on their blog. This one features the Cache-A-Maniacs logo, a camera, and a firefly. The "Cache-A-Maniacs Guest Ducky" (TB23G6C) uses their Guest Coin's tracking number to log and track on Geocaching.com. It's mission is actually three fold;

to meet geocachers who have been been guests on the Cache-A-Maniacs
to have listeners answer their favorite Rapid Response Question,
and to us at a Mega-Event or mby getting to our Boulan Park Cache II (GC1472M) cache.

Unboxing a Guest Coin?

A recent guest on our Cache-A-Maniacs show did something a little unexpected. If you haven't heard of an unboxing video this might seem a little strange, but they are common among the tech set. The point is to basically share the excitement of opening a present, but typically a new piece of hardware. Gianster98 was the guest for episode 208 of the Cache-A-Maniacs and hosts his own podcast on TalkShoe titled "Geocraze." He sat down in front of the camera and did a short unboxing video of the Cache-A-Maniacs Guest and Discovery geocoins we sent.

Cachers interviewed on a Cache-A-Maniac show receive a package like this one. They get the Cache-A-Maniacs Guest coin to keep for themselves and a Cache-A-Maniacs Discovery Coin with information about their appearance to release in their area (you can see Gianster98's coin here). Unfortunately he got the coins a little mixed up in his video, but it was cool to see a guest receive and open his coins. Thanks Gianster98!

No Cachercon 2011

We've been getting a few questions over the last several months as to whether we'll host another Cachercon this year. The answer is simply no, but more accurately, not this year, but next year. Due to the level of planning, funding, and just plain effort it takes to pull it off we've decided to make Cachercon Metro Detroit biannual, running on only the even years. We will be looking to build a panel shortly to plan Cachercon Metro Detroit 2012, but aren't ready to make any announcements or commitments yet. I will mention that the mission of Cachercon has been to provide a forum for Geocacher education, entertainment, and socialization during the winter months as we're all itching to get out caching again but don't want to due to the snow and cold. We will be looking to expand the portfolio this year with things like workshops in addition to the presentations. We hope to be able to offer a space for vendors as well, possibly even have sponsors to help fund the event. Those who completed the survey and said they would like to help with the next Cachercon will be contacted within the next couple of months, but if you would like to be part of the planning e-mail me. We'd also love to hear from people who would be interested in hosting sessions (presentations, workshops, or entertainment) for Cachercon Metro Detroit 2012. I'll post information to this blog as we start nailing down details.

I'm catching up with several of the iOS app updates which dropped during the first part of this month in one post:

Groundspeak's Geocaching App for iOS was updated on the seventh. Version 4.2.2 addressed several issues in the app but doesn't add anything new. Sadly I've not been able to find release notes on the Geocaching forums for more information than was provided in the update screen.

PiGo was updated to version 1.2.1 on the eleventh. This version simply contained a work-around for the web site login issue.

The new "CacheMe" app also saw an update on the eleventh. This is the first time I've written about this new app which connects with Garmin's OpenCaching.com site.

The iOS app simply titled "Caching" also has received an update to version 2 on the seventeenth. It now features file transfers within iTunes, Geocaching.com compatible field notes, information about travel bugs within a cache, iPhone 4 support, and more.

MotionX GPS version 15 also dropped. I've been ignoring many of the subtle updates this app has received, but this is a major release with several new features. The full version is still $2.99 for new users, and the lite version is still free to everyone.

Garmin's Open Caching Goes Beta

The much discussed, rumored, and debated Opencaching.com opened its doors in beta today. Garmin touts this as "...completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches around the world." The difference they're pushing is called "The Awesome Factor" which allows the user to rank the cache. This with the size, terrain, and difficulty ratings are tied together in a single bulls-eye illustration giving the cacher a simple overview of the cache. Their venture into the listing service arena looks promising but the buzz on Twitter affirmed the beta nature of the release with complaints about several features not functioning. Hopefully these are quickly resolved and we'll be able to get a good feeling of this new service.

Milford Milestone Hike

Saturday morning found us on the Milford Trail for a short Motor City Cache Machine hike. The crew consisted of seven people -- TeamLegend4, searchgeek78, moosetracks82, Geoaddict, and us. It turned out to be a hike of milestones with each cacher hitting one along the way.

The first milestone was hit by TeamLegend4 on only the second cache of the outing. That 6,000th find was at the traditional cache "'Sillybillies'" (GC1580D) by Track -- a nice location this time of the year with the trees and view of the lake.

We made our 3,800th find next on a multi-cache which threw us for a little bit of a loop. Tail Mix 8 tossed in a red herring on "Milford Trail - No Trolling" (GC2F6HR) which we fell for before opening the container. We grabbed our photo near there however since it made a better location for the shot than did the final. It was a nicely done cache though which we will be remembering for some time.

Shortly after that searchgeek78 made his 150th find on another cool cache. "Milford Trail - A Little Monkey Business" (GC2ER8X) by 5*Terrain required a little climbing to be had. Another fun cache for the experience we'll not soon loose in our minds.

The next milestone was moosetracks82's 100th find which we missed along the way. If I count correctly, that would have been at "Milford Trail - Deadwood" (GC2F7DB) by Trail Mix 8. It's unfortunate that we hadn't noticed this on the trail and grabbed her photo (another cool location for a shot), but she walked right up to this one as we started fanning out for the search.

Last milestone on the trip, and nearing the last cache, and Geoaddict's 1,000th find. This was four years in the making and the only ammo can on the trail. He had a great location at "I Scream for Ice Cream (and Biking!)" (GC1RMQ4) by MorseCode762 (though I don't recommend taking the bike off the trail for anyone attempting it after reading this) for that find and photo.

Of course this was just planned as a hike along a cool geocache trail and the milestones just fell that way, but made the trip that much better. We're looking forward to more caching with the group during the cooler fall season but there's not that much time till the cold winter season and the big New Years Day event in Roseville.

PiGo version 1.1

Last week's release of the Wherigo player for iPhone was followed up this week with an update and name change. WherPiGo version 1 has become PiGo version 1.1 to "...avoid a trademark issue" and fix a minor problem in the app.
